I have started a ton of series over the years. I can think of very few series that I have read from beginning to end without getting bored and moving on to something else, with the intention to “come back to it later.” Of course, later never comes.
In 2020, I want to make progress in completing a few of the series that I have started.
In January 2018, I read the first in the Star Wars: Aftermath trilogy by Chuck Wendig. It has been 2 years, and every now and then I look up at the Star Wars section on my shelves (yes, I have a section) and I think to myself “I need to read those.” And then I don’t.
I started to read A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet late last year, and I put it down for some reason – I think at that point I had started to read 4 or 5 books and got overwhelmed. I put everything down just because I couldn’t decide which I wanted to read more. Anyway, this book paralysis means that I didn’t finish the Wayfarer series by Becky Chambers, and I hear such amazing things about it all the time.
This last month or so, I started the Lightbringer series by Brent Weeks on audio. I have read the first 2 and am on the 3rd right now, with one more audiobook available from the library to go. I want to keep up the momentum through January and finish as much as I can. I doubt I can get the audio of book 5 from the library since it is so new, so I might just pick it up in print from the library instead (but I saw it at the store the other day and it is HUGE so maybe not).
In May 2019, I was introduced to one of my favorite authors ever, Lois McMaster Bujold, when I read The Curse of Chalion, the first in the World of the Five Gods series. There are 3 main novels and a separate sub-series of novellas that I want to read in 2020.
Finally, I want to continue reading the Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold. I read the first 18 (!!!!!) books in this series in 2019, and I still have 5 more to go before I have finished the series as it stands now. I love this series so much that I got depressed that I only had 5 more left and I stopped reading them and switched to Lightbringer. I want to move past that block and finish it in 2020 (then maybe start all over again and continue reading in a circle for the rest of my life idk).
There you have it – the 5 main series I want to finish in 2020! I would love to say something ridiculously ambitious like “read all of Discworld” or “read all of Asimov” or “finish Wheel of Time” but I know myself. I would definitely fail. I’m not into failing a challenge before I even start it.
What series do you want to finish in 2020? Let me know in the comments!
