Bookmarks: A Discussion

Good morning! I came to a weird revelation about bookmarks today and needed to share it with you all.

My revelation: I’m boring.

No really, I am so boring when it comes to bookmarks. I am very much a random-piece-of-paper-near-me kind of person. I have seen to many gorgeous bookmarks, and have been given so many beautiful bookmarks as gifts, but I will still reach for whatever is nearest to me, whether it be a receipt or ripping a small piece of notebook paper to use.

I’m not one of those people that uses a taco for a bookmark like some hooligans (WHO DOES THIS?????). I was raised properly – I know that food can damage a book. I just have no problem with using a spare clean napkin to mark my page. If there’s nothing around I might even — le GASP — dog-ear the page.

dragon

Since I am so boring, I decided to take a look at some bookmarks just to see what I’ve been missing, and I never realized how many different types of bookmarks there are in the world! I saw some that were the usual paper bookmarks with beautiful designs. I was particularly partial to this one with the dragons (I love dragons).

bookcharm

I have been coveting these bookmarks that are more like book jewelry than anything. I would love for my book to look like it’s dressed to attend a fancy luncheon. This one has a tiny crab on it!

bookdart

have used book darts before — they came in a subscription box I ordered several years ago and I remember liking them okay. They do tarnish pretty badly after a while, and they are really easy to lose, but they have an understated elegance to them.

spoon

I found some pretty unique-looking bookmarks on Etsy as well. There are spoon book marks that have sayings etched into them! I’ve never seen these before, but I think they look pretty neat. It reminds me of spoon rings, which I had an obsession with as a young person.

leather

Then I found the leather book marks, which look very fancy. This looks like something you have to buy at an expensive shop downtown.

wire

This one might be my favorite of all the unique bookmarks I saw. It’s a personalized wire bookmark with a little cute design to hang over the edge of the book. It might be a bit bulky, but I think it is such a cool design.

corner

The last design I am uncertain about. It’s a bookmark that goes over the edge of the page. Would this not fall off? That’s the only thing I don’t like about it. I love the patterns and I think the idea is great, but I just cringe at the thought of losing my place because my cute little corner bookmark fell off in my bag.

As much fun as it was looking at all the choices we have when it comes to bookmarks nowadays, I most likely will stick to my anything-at-hand method of marking my page. I love the idea of owning a ton of cool bookmarks, but I just know that I’ll lose them or put them away somewhere that I’ll forget to use them.

Don’t forget to comment down below to yell at me for dog-earring my books!! 🙂
